What Is The Freon Phase Out? Here’s What You Need to Know

As of January 1st, 2020, freon is going to become obsolete nationwide since this chemical has been found to be very harmful for the environment. Also known as R22 refrigerant, Freon will still be available for some time in the coming year but since it’s being slowly phased out it’s also going to become cost prohibitive for any homeowner who needs freon in smaller amounts to charge up their air conditioner.

About Freon Phase Out

Love it or hate it, the goal with freon phase out is to help the environment and ozone layer because it’s been proven to be a harmful chemical for the ozone layer.

If you rely on a heating or cooling system that uses R22 refrigerant, an ozone-depleting substance (ODS), you may be in for a surprise during your next service visit. As of January 1, 2020, production and import of R22 refrigerant will be illegal in the United States. Of course, continued use of your air conditioner (AC) or heat pump system using R22 refrigerant is allowed. However, it does mean that if your AC or heat pump system needs a repair that involves refrigerant, you may have to decide between a hefty refrigerant bill and a system replacement.

What’s the Alternative?

You may be asking yourself what’s the alternative to freon? The answer to this question is converting your central air conditioner to puron or if it can’t be converted, you may have to consider replacing your system to a new system that only used puron and not freon.
